Tedeschi-Trucks is from another planet.
I saw Derek Trucks for the first time about 8 years ago at a much smaller venue, and back then, my mind was thoroughly blown. That was on another level.
Susan Tedeschi, with a powerful, incredibly soulful voice and great guitar chops, is amazing. During the 4-song (!!) encore, she treated us to "Angels from Montgomery," and it was beautiful, with opener Jackie Greene on guitar. I'm delighted that Mike Madison was retained from DTB, as his vocals are remarkable. Their other vocalist, whom I hadn't heard before, has an incredible range up high, which complements Madison's depth. The rhythm section, as a drummer, caught my attention, with two drummers playing as one with great dynamics, and a bassist who lays it down hard. Kofi on keys & flute plays as well as anyone I've ever heard, providing great definition to the rhythm section. The horns... oh, the horns!! The dude on trombone was killin' it, with chops to compete with Trombone Shorty, and I'm pretty sure I've never heard a trumpet play so high. They add a great punch to an already deep back line.
And then there's Derek Trucks, who is not human. He is a sophisticated being from the future, a wonderful place where anthropomorphized Gibson SGs roam the Earth, sent back to blow the feeble human mind & shift the paradigm of what is musically possible. Humans often react to things that are bigger than they can comprehend with laughter & tears. That's how I reacted to Derek's solos in several songs, no kidding. My wife thought I'd lost it, just laughing & crying over guitar solos. Laughing in the face of mad genius is the best way I can describe it. Sounds stupid, but that's what it is. The man speaks through his instrument in a way that isn't often seen. I grew up listening to my dad's Allman Brothers records, and Duane is undoubtedly among the best who ever lived, but Derek is the Duane Allman of a new generation, taking the art of the guitar to new levels. There's a line that Susan sings in "Made up Mind," "I'm on a higher ground"... yes, you & Sebastian Maniscalco certainly are.
Go see Tedeschi Trucks band, however possible. Drive hours if you need to. It's worth it, I promise.
